I'm Michael Tay.
Candidate for Ottawa City Council – Somerset Ward (Ward 14). I've spent over 17 years working on the front lines in our community, and I believe City Hall needs practical, community-focused leadership.

My Approach to Leadership
The way we lead is just as important as the decisions we make. These principles will guide my conversations, votes, and every decision I make as your City Councillor.

Listen First
Before offering solutions, I'll take the time to understand what residents, businesses, and community organizations are experiencing. The best ideas begin by listening.

Work Collaboratively
Real progress happens when residents, businesses, community organizations, experts, and government work together. We won't always agree, but we can always work toward better solutions.

Focus on Results
Success is measured by whether our neighbourhoods become safer, our public spaces more welcoming, our local businesses thrive, and our community feels better served.
Frequently Asked Questions
I was born in Halifax to immigrant parents and have spent nearly two decades working alongside youth, families, newcomers, and people experiencing homelessness. My experiences in social services, education, and community leadership have shaped my belief that strong communities are built when people show up for one another.
After 17 years of working to improve our community from outside City Hall, I want to bring that experience to the decision-making table. I believe Somerset deserves practical, collaborative leadership that listens first, brings people together, and focuses on making everyday life better for residents.
I bring nearly 20 years of experience in social services, including frontline work and program leadership, along with experience in education, the legal field, and community advocacy. I’m also a Professor at Algonquin College and Co-Chair of the Ottawa Police Community Equity Council.
